Nutrition Standards for School Meals

Today the new Nutrition Standards for School Meals were launched by the Minister for Health, the Minister for Education and Skills and the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection. These standards are designed to ensure the School Meals programme follows the national Healthy Eating Guidelines.

The standards will apply to meals provided under the School Meals (Local Projects) Scheme. This scheme provides funding to primary and post-primary schools in areas of disadvantage (DEIS schools) in the Republic of Ireland.

The standards are food-based and were developed using the Food Pyramid. They outline healthy choices for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Only healthy food choices that meet the standards will be funded.
