What are the estimated costs of childhood overweight and obesity on the island of Ireland?

One in four children on the island of Ireland (IOI) is overweight or obese. Research has been carried out to estimate the lifetime costs associated with excess body weight in children on the IOI.

Key findings from this research include:

  • The total lifetime cost of childhood overweight and obesity on the IOI is 7.2 billion euro.
  • Indirect health care costs associated with childhood overweight and obesity are greater than direct health care costs. Indirect healthcare costs are a result of early death, absence from work and lifetime income loss. Direct health care costs are a result of healthcare expenditure.
  • If body mass index (BMI) was reduced by 1% the lifetime cost of childhood overweight and obesity would be reduced by 270 million euro in the Republic of Ireland and 79.5 million euro in Northern Ireland.
  • The estimated cost of childhood overweight and obesity would be reduced by 1.1 billion euro in the Republic of Ireland and 329.3 million euro in Northern Ireland if body mass index fell by 5%.
