Fast-food, everyday life and health: A qualitative study of chicken takeaways in East London

More fast food outlets are been found in many socially deprived areas in Ireland and UK. In a qualitative study carried out in East London the role of  "the chicken" fast food outlet in that community was explored with local residents.

The results showed that these outlets were embedded in the social fabric of the community. By many they were viewed as unhealthy but discussions highlighted that this was contradicted through perceptions of trust, choice, balance, food hygiene and compensatory physical activity. By some residents these shops were in fact viewed as healthy. The research highlights that strategies undertaken to improve healthy eating must take into account the context within which fast food outlets are viewed by the target audience.
