Ethics of digital food marketing to children

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published an article discussing the ethics of assessing digital marketing of food and drink to children (PDF).

Digital marketing of food and drink to children has generated a lot of interest in recent times, however assessing the extent and nature of children’s exposure to this marketing proves difficult. It involves accessing personal data about users in an ethical and legal manner.

The authors conclude that accessing such information can be done ethically but this must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The authors list some key considerations for doing so in the article.
