Irish consumers not eating enough fruit and vegetables

A consumer review of fruit and vegetable intake in Ireland (PDF, 2MB) has just been published by safefood.

It reports that although it is well known that fruit and vegetables are a key component of a healthy diet and lifestyle and that 75% of consumers are aware that they should be eating five portions of fruit and vegetable daily, only 36% are achieving this recommendation.

Previous research (PDF, 1MB) has shown that the average intake of fruit and vegetables in Ireland is currently less than half the recommendation, at 2.4 portions per day.

This current review found that cost, shelf life, preparation time and habit were seen by consumers as the main barriers to buying and consuming more fruit and vegetables.
