National Healthy Cities and Counties of Ireland Network

Yesterday the Minister of State for Health Promotion, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, TD, launched the National Healthy Cities and Counties of Ireland Network.

A healthy city is one that is continually creating and improving those physical and social environments and expanding those community resources which enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and developing to their maximum potential.”- World Health Organisation (WHO)

The National Healthy Cities and Counties Network of Ireland is being launched under Healthy Ireland. The Healthy Cities project is a global WHO movement. The primary goal is to put health high on the social, economic and political agenda of city governments. The Minister noted the importance of empowering and supporting communities to lead healthier lives through the network. Waterford city, Cork city, Galway city, South Dublin and Offaly are currently healthy cities and counties in Ireland.
