Perinatal Statistics Report 2009

The most recent Perinatal Statistics Report (2009) was launched today by the ESRI. The report showed that 45% of babies were exclusively breastfed at discharge from hospital, compared to 44% in 2005 and 38% in 2000. Breastfeeding was found to be more common than artificial feeding when mothers are aged 30 years and older.

The presence of exclusive breastfeeding  at discharge from hospital varied by geographic location with infants born to mothers in Dublin county reporting the highest rate of breastfeeding. Mothers in a higher professional occupation recorded breastfeeding rates of over 63.3% compared to the lowest rate for unemployed mothers of whom only 27.4% breastfed.
