Health benefits of a high fibre diet

In a study published in the Lancet, Reynolds and colleagues use systematic and meta-analysis review methodology to show that high fibre and wholegrain intakes are associated with positive health outcomes. These include a reduced risk (15-30%) of mortality (all-cause and cardiovascular disease), incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer.

Dietary surveys on the island of Ireland have shown that the majority of the population are not meeting dietary fibre guidelines. The best way to increase our fibre intake is to choose wholegrain varieties and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. For more information on healthy eating guidelines take a look at the Food Pyramid and the Eatwell Guide.
