New research suggests obesity may be responsible for more deaths than previously thought

Media worldwide are today reporting about a study which found that obesity may be responsible for far more deaths than previous estimates of about 5%.

The study, which was published in the American Journal of Public Health, suggests that over a 20-year period, about 18% of deaths in the United States among people aged between 40 and 85 years were linked to being overweight and obese. It also found that more of women than men died as a result of their weight. These findings are based on data from a national survey spanning 1986 to 2006.
