Sugar sweetened drinks tax comes into effect in the Republic of Ireland

Today, 01 May 2018, the sugar sweetened drinks tax came into effect in the Republic of Ireland. The tax is one of a number of measures being implemented under ‘‘A Healthy Weight for Ireland – Obesity Policy and Action Plan 2016-2025’’ to reduce levels of obesity.

Soft-drinks Industry Levy in Northern Ireland

On 6 April 2018, a soft-drinks industry levy was introduced for Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. The tax applies to sugary drinks that have an added sugar content of at least 5g per 100ml.

Sugar-sweetened drinks tax in the Republic of Ireland

The Department of Finance have provided an update on the introduction of a sugar-sweetened drinks tax in the Republic of Ireland. The tax was due to begin on 6 April but will now commence on the 1 May 2018.
