A recipe for Northern Ireland students to get safefood for life

27 June, 2006. safefood is today launching an exciting educational programme to Northern Ireland post primary schools to create lifelong skills in food safety and hygiene.

The ‘safefood for life’ programme offers post primary students the chance to develop not only an understanding and awareness of food safety but also provides them with the opportunity to sit an online examination in Food Hygiene with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Speaking at the launch, Martin Higgins, Chief Executive, safefood said: “Students today have so many pressures with homework and exams that lessons about food hygiene need to be exciting and engaging. This subject is vital, not just for those students who might be considering a career in the food and catering industry but also for establishing everyday food hygiene skills for later in life. ‘safefood for life’ aims to make learning about food hygiene more attractive through high quality, entertaining resources and the opportunity to achieve a very practical and highly regarded qualification.”

Designed to put fun into learning about food hygiene, the ‘safefood for life’ programme offers an online educational resource for teachers comprising course slides, teacher’s notes and student activities. All the materials will be available on the C2K network to which all schools in Northern Ireland have access.

Celebrity TV chef Jenny Bristow has also lent her support to the ‘safefood for life’ programme. Speaking at today’s launch she said: “While there is no doubt that a career as a TV chef can appear glamorous, it needs to be underpinned by sound technical knowledge about food safety and hygiene. The ‘safefood for life’ programme offers young home economics students a tremendous opportunity to gain a sound beginning to their potential careers.”

Developed by safefood with input from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), the Council for the Curriculum, Examination and Assessment (CCEA) and the Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland (FSANI), the ‘safefood for life’ programme is aimed at home economics students at Key Stages 3 and 4 and will be available to schools on the C2K network from later this year.

The ‘safefood for life’ programme is the latest in a series of educational resources to be produced by safefood. Additional materials include “The Hands of Doom”, a pantomime resource kit for primary schools using stories, characters, jokes and songs to communicate simple hygiene messages, an online labelling resource and lesson plan, a range of leaflets and publications developed with education specialists and focused on the school curriculum, and a teachers’ e-newsletter covering contemporary food safety and nutrition topics.
