Avian flu and food safety - safefood response

17 October, 2005. safefood, the Food Safety Promotion Board, advises consumers that the outbreaks of avian (bird) flu in Romania and Turkey do not pose a food safety risk.

There is no risk through eating poultry or poultry products.

The risk, for humans, of catching the disease comes from being in close contact with live diseased poultry. There have been no reports of people handling poultry meat getting infected.
