safefood welcomes today’s Budget announcement of the introduction of a Sugar Tax from next April

10 October 2017. safefood welcomes today’s announcement in the Budget of the introduction of a Sugar Tax from April 2018. Commenting, Dr Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, Director, Human Health and Nutrition safefood said:

“We welcome the tax as an important public health measure. Clearly, the food industry has a key role that they play in what’s provided and marketed to our children. It has conclusively been proven that the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, particularly in children, leads to weight gain and tooth decay. There is no nutritional value in these products. With 1 in 4 children* on the island of Ireland either overweight or obese, this tax is one of a range of measures that can influence parents’ and children’s behaviour”.
